Google said Tuesday that US users can launch personal Android apps made with AI Studio directly through the Play Store. They no longer need to connect their phone to a computer to install an app they have made.

Google introduced the ability to make personal Android apps with AI Studio in May. The new Play Store option gives those apps a more direct route to the phone.

The apps will remain “secure, private, and separate from the public store catalog,” according to Google. Users can view their library of personal apps in the Play Store.

Standard accounts can launch personal apps

A standard Google account is enough to launch a personal app. Google also sees the feature as a way for people experimenting with apps to start developing for a wider audience.

“If you want to share your app with the world, Google Play helps you graduate to a professional developer account with the same Trust & Safety reviews and high-quality standards as professional developers,” Sam Bright, Google’s vice president and general manager of Google Play, writes in the announcement.

For now, the new launch option is available in the US. Google says it will soon add a way to share a personal app with a select group of people.
