Google has added file creation, previewing and editing to the Gemini app. Users can work on documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets, code and other files within a chat, the company announced on October 29, 2026.

Gemini can generate a file from a request and show a preview in the conversation. Users can expand the file to full screen and type changes directly. They can also highlight text to ask a question or request a revision from Gemini.

Google says users can ask Gemini to refine both text and visuals. In one example, a user uploads handwritten lecture notes and asks Gemini to turn them into a PDF study guide. The user can then edit it manually or highlight a section for Gemini to change.

Support varies by device and file type

Support varies by device and file type. PDF previewing and editing work on the web and on mobile. Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files and code are supported on the web only.

The features are available now to all users in every language where the Gemini app is available, according to Google.

What this means

On October 29, 2026, Google launched a preview of its Connected Apps Platform for developers building Search and Gemini integrations, while beginning to roll out Gmail-based Chrome autofill suggestions for Gemini in Chrome users in the United States. In the Gemini app update released the same day, users can expand generated files to full screen to type manual edits directly, or highlight specific text sections to request automated revisions. The interface also supports visual refinements, allowing handwritten notes uploaded to a chat to be converted into formatted study guides.
