Why it matters

GitHub says teams can automate tasks such as issue triage and test writing within GitHub Actions while using their existing runner groups and policy constraints.

The facts

  • GitHub Agentic Workflows is generally available on github.com for Free, Team and Enterprise.
  • It runs coding agents in GitHub Actions using workflows written in natural language Markdown.
  • The release adds self-hosted runner support and model routing; the default Copilot CLI engine requires a Copilot license.

GitHub Agentic Workflows is now generally available. The open source project from GitHub Next lets users run coding agents inside GitHub Actions to handle tasks such as issue triage, CI failure analysis, documentation updates and test writing.

Users describe a workflow in a natural language Markdown file, which Agentic Workflows compiles into standard GitHub Actions YAML. GitHub says the resulting workflows use existing runner groups and policy constraints. Each workflow can run with GitHub Copilot or another coding agent.

GitHub says agents have read-only permissions by default and run in a sandboxed container behind the Agent Workflow Firewall. The company says it also applies integrity filters to GitHub content, validates outputs and scans proposed changes for threats before applying them.

The release adds new runner and model options

The general availability release adds support for self-hosted Actions Runner Controller runners with Docker-in-Docker. Users can choose model providers for individual workflows or use a model router that selects models by task type and difficulty. GitHub has also added workflow templates and options to isolate agents in a Cloud Hypervisor or NVX micro-VM.

The gh aw forecast command is no longer experimental. GitHub says its estimates now include threat detection credits and monthly ranges for AI credit spending.

Internal rollout reduced production errors

GitHub also reports results from its rollout of agentic developer workflows. It says one lead saved an estimated 29 hours a week, while measured velocity across that lead’s team more than doubled on average. According to GitHub, AI now authors 91% of the team’s commits, and the team reduced production errors from about 11,000 a day to under 1,000.

Users can install the CLI extension through GitHub’s quickstart guide and find prebuilt examples for triage, dependency management, code review and reporting in GitHub Next’s agentics repository. Agentic Workflows is available now on github.com for GitHub Free, Team and Enterprise. Running a workflow with the default GitHub Copilot CLI engine requires a Copilot license.

What this means

On October 28, 2026, GitHub made Copilot Fusion generally available to coordinate AI models across three effort levels for coding tasks, following IBM's October 27 release of Agent Identity and Vault 2.2 to restrict AI agent access. Within GitHub Agentic Workflows, agents operate with read-only permissions by default behind an Agent Workflow Firewall, with optional isolation using a Cloud Hypervisor or NVX micro-VM. During internal rollout of these workflows, GitHub reported that AI authored 91 percent of a team's commits, accompanied by a drop in production errors from about 11,000 a day to under 1,000.
