Anthropic Cuts Claude Subscription Coverage for Third-Party AI Tools
Anthropic quietly changed how Claude subscriptions work. From April 4, users can no longer access Claude through third-party tools like OpenClaw under a standard monthly plan. They now need either extra usage bundles or a direct API key.
Boris Cherny, head of Claude Code, announced the change on X. The reason is straightforward: automated agent tools were putting far more strain on Anthropic's infrastructure than regular chat users. A standard subscription was priced for someone having conversations. Agents can make thousands of API calls per day, often running in parallel. The math stopped working.
Until now, paid Claude plans (Pro and Max tiers) covered usage on third-party integrations. That made building with OpenClaw or similar tools relatively cheap. That era is over.
Two paths forward for affected users: buy additional usage bundles on top of existing subscriptions, or switch to API-based billing and pay per token. To soften the blow, Anthropic is offering one-time credits equivalent to a month's subscription value, plus discounted bundles for impacted users.
Cherny framed it as a capacity decision, not a monetization one. "We've been working hard to meet the increase in demand for Claude," he said. "Our subscriptions weren't built for the usage patterns of these third-party tools."
The move brings Anthropic in line with how most AI companies handle agent workloads. High-volume, automated usage costs more. Flat-rate subscriptions were always going to be a temporary fit.
