OpenAI has expanded its GPT-6 generation by releasing updated versions of its smaller Sol and Luna models. Earlier this month, OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra as its most powerful model for computer work and coding. The lab is now extending those benefits by making that intelligence more efficient and accessible.
The first models in the Sol and Luna series debuted earlier this year. Sol handles complex tasks like coding. Luna focuses on clerical work such as summarizing documents, extracting information, and answering quick questions.
OpenAI is emphasizing major improvements in efficiency and affordability through a substantial price drop for API access. The 6 series models cost half as much as the 5.6 series of Sol and Luna. OpenAI attributes this price drop to improvements in caching and inference.
The company also claims its newest models produce better factual accuracy and feature a lower error rate in coding. Internal factuality evaluations show that GPT-6 Sol makes about half as many mistakes as its predecessor. This reaches Astra-level reliability at a much lower cost.
OpenAI is claiming that its newest offerings outshine those of its primary competitor, Anthropic. The company repeatedly states that GPT-6 Sol and Luna handle tasks substantially better than Anthropic top models like Fable and Opus.
Anthropic released a new version of Opus 5.5 just 90 minutes before the OpenAI release. This timing highlights the intense competition between the two companies.
The new versions of Sol and Luna are currently available in ChatGPT Work and Codex for most paid accounts. They are also available in the ChatGPT API. Luna will be available in the desktop app and for Free and Go users.
OpenAI expects to roll out the models to the ChatGPT app and website gradually throughout the day.
