Meta announced on Tuesday that developers can now use preferred AI agents to set up and manage WhatsApp Business messaging. The announcement accompanied news regarding new AI focused subscription plans.
Previously, configuring WhatsApp Business messaging required developers to navigate multiple tools and services. Developers had to switch between the Developer Console, Meta Business Manager, the API reference, and their editor.
Now, developers can simply chat with an AI agent and describe their requirements. The AI agent will handle the setup process directly.
This functionality is powered by the WhatsApp Business Tools MCP. This is a Model Context Protocol server connecting AI coding agents like Claude, Cursor, Codex, and ChatGPT to the WhatsApp Business Platform.
Meta is expanding its existing lineup of MCP servers with this release. Previous MCP servers handled ad management, app configuration monitoring, and social technologies.
Numerous other technology companies offer MCP servers for secure AI agent interaction. These companies include PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce, Atlassian, X, Google, and Microsoft.
During setup, the AI agent performs various tasks automatically. It creates the company WhatsApp Business account, adds and verifies the phone number, registers access to the Cloud API, and checks terms of service compliance.
Businesses can also utilize the AI agent for ongoing tasks. These include describing and creating new messaging templates or editing existing ones.
Furthermore, agents can test messages and webhooks. They can also monitor items that might previously have failed quietly, such as terms of service, payment methods, and business verification.
Meta noted that its other server, the Meta Social Technologies MCP, can be used concurrently. Developers can use it to discover API endpoints, search documentation, and troubleshoot errors.
