The KDE project is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The annual Akademy conference takes place this weekend at Graz University of Technology in Austria. Registration for the event remains open.
KDE began as the Kool Desktop Environment. It stands as one of the earliest entirely free and open source software desktop environments for Linux. Version 1.0 launched in July 1998. KDE software now runs on multiple operating systems.
A potentially contentious proposal will be presented during a Sunday afternoon talk. The session is titled What would it take? A lovable, sovereign, AI-native KDE. Longtime KDE contributors Eva Brucherseifer and Jan Muehlig are presenting the talk.
In 2003, Brucherseifer and Muehlig conducted a usability study of KDE 3.1. They tested 60 office workers with no prior Linux experience. Eighty-seven percent of those participants reported they enjoyed working with KDE.
The upcoming presentation has three main sections. The speakers will review what KDE learned from the 2003 study. They will also discuss the case for an AI-native desktop. Finally, they will address the importance of a sovereign European computing stack.
The middle section of the talk is expected to divide attendees. The presentation outline describes a desktop that compiles itself per user, per device, and per moment. This concept relies on a portable model of the user called Kadai. Kadai is sketched as an encrypted, vendor-agnostic personal kernel.
Under this proposal, Plasma would assemble each Activity from the Kadai kernel. The outline states that Plasma is well-suited for this approach because of its Activities, Plasmoids, and existing scripting surface. Upstream changes would be required to turn KDE into a shell that treats artificial intelligence as infrastructure rather than a chat box.
Writer and AI critic David Gerard highlighted similarities between this proposal and the Resonant Computing Manifesto. The manifesto launched in December 2025 at Wired's Big Interview in San Francisco. Gerard criticized that manifesto later that month.
Gerard also noted that contributors to the Trinity Desktop Environment have started dabbling with AI-generated code. Trinity is a fork of KDE 3. Users wanting to avoid artificial intelligence on their desktops can also monitor the progress of the Sonic Desktop Environment.
