Anthropic launched a new system called Mods for its Claude Code developer tool. The plugin-based architecture functions as middleware running directly inside the application.
Developers can customize interface and behavior
The system relies on JavaScript or TypeScript functions that hook into specific events. Developers can target user prompts, tool calls, and UI rendering. This design lets programmers add custom panels next to the chat interface, intercept tool calls, or build entirely new commands. Anthropic notes that existing features like the /diff command already operate as internal Mods.
Anthropic shares sample code on GitHub
Anthropic published sample Mods on GitHub to help developers get started. The software operates using the user permissions on the host machine. Because these functions lack a sandbox environment, Anthropic warns users to install plugins exclusively from trusted sources. The Mods function within the command line interface, the desktop application, and partially inside the VS Code extension. Meanwhile, organizations retain the ability to restrict which Mods are permitted to load on their systems.
The first official plugin monitors output
The initial official Mod plugin carries the name You Should Know. The feature deploys a separate agent to monitor the output generated by Claude. When the agent detects important details that users might overlook, it delivers a heads up message. Users can activate this capability using the command /plugin enable cc-plugin-you-should-know@builtin.
Anthropic continues to provide sample plugins and administrative controls for enterprise environments. The company distributes sample Mods on GitHub for developer adoption.
