Waymo says it is preparing to bring its fully autonomous ride-hailing service to Spain, starting in the Region of Madrid. The company aims to welcome its first riders there in 2027.

Residents will begin seeing Waymo’s electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles on the region’s streets in the coming days, according to the company. They will initially be driven manually. Waymo then plans technical validation with trained local autonomous vehicle specialists behind the wheel.

Waymo says that testing will help its driving system adapt to local traffic patterns and road conditions. The company is also working with national, regional and local authorities, familiarising emergency services with its technology, and engaging local partners. It says it is investing in the local operations needed to support the service.

Waymo has completed more than 20 million trips

The Madrid plan follows more than 20 million trips completed by Waymo, which says it now serves hundreds of thousands of commercial rides each week. Those figures describe its existing operations, before the planned service in Spain.

Waymo says it wants its operations to align with Spanish national and regional rules and local needs. For now, its next step in Madrid is to put vehicles on the road for manual driving, followed by technical validation. It aims to welcome its first riders in 2027.
