Uber Builds an Autonomous Vehicle Empire With More Than 30 Partners

Uber is rebuilding its autonomous vehicle ambitions without trying to build the entire self-driving stack itself. The company has partnered with, and in several cases invested in, more than 30 autonomous vehicle businesses during the past two years.

The network covers far more than robotaxi software. It includes vehicle makers, autonomous driving developers, delivery-robot companies, fleet operators, charging providers, and businesses responsible for cleaning and maintaining driverless cars. Uber's app and demand network sit at the center.

From internal lab to platform strategy

This approach is a sharp reversal from Uber's first attempt at autonomy. The company created its Advanced Technologies Group in 2014, recruited robotics researchers, and tested self-driving vehicles on public roads. A trade-secret lawsuit from Waymo, leadership turmoil, and the fatal 2018 crash of an Uber test vehicle in Tempe helped unravel that effort.

Uber sold the division to Aurora in 2020 as it retreated from expensive experimental projects. It kept an equity stake, however, and later returned to autonomy through partnerships. The company now owns meaningful positions in businesses including Aurora and Lucid while bringing vehicles from several developers onto its ride-hailing and delivery platforms.

The strategy gives autonomous driving companies access to customers without forcing each one to build a consumer network from scratch. It also gives Uber many chances to participate if one technical approach, vehicle platform, or regional operator succeeds.

There are still major risks. Many deployments need regulatory approval, safety operators, fleet infrastructure, and years of validation. Uber also works with partners that may eventually compete with one another or with Uber itself. The company is betting that owning the marketplace will matter more than owning one self-driving system.
