Sean Parker has returned to the music industry with a new venture. The Napster co-founder told The Information that he intends to follow the rules this time. He conceded that his previous approach of asking for forgiveness rather than permission did not work well.
Stability AI changed leadership after a crisis
Two years ago, Parker participated in an $80 million rescue of Stability AI. The image generator startup nearly collapsed due to overspending and internal turmoil. This crisis led to the ouster of founder Emad Mostaque.
Parker and his longtime friend Prem Akkaraju took charge of the company. Akkaraju stepped in as CEO while Parker helped steer the rescue effort. They spent the following two years building a new direction for the firm.
Major record labels funded the music pivot
Stability AI secured $76 million in funding in late August. Investors included Sony, Warner, and Universal. These major record labels also licensed their catalogs for AI training as part of the agreement.
The company is now positioning itself as an artificial intelligence toolmaker for music professionals. Parker and Akkaraju revealed this new strategy after keeping their development efforts under wraps.
