Why it matters

The change signals OpenAI's shift away from heavily subsidized subscriptions toward pay-per-use pricing.

The facts

  • OpenAI reopened its $200-per-month Pro subscription to new users.
  • The company cut the included API credits per dollar in half.
  • The five-hour usage cap was removed for subscribers.

OpenAI is bringing back its $200 per month Pro subscription for new sign-ups. At the same time, the company is reducing the API credits provided per dollar by half.

Employee Thibault Sottiaux states that subscribers will still accomplish more than a month ago. He highlights the release of GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna this week. These models shipped at half the API price of their predecessors.

Usage caps change permanently

The previous five-hour usage cap is gone for good. Subscribers can now distribute their weekly credit allotment however they choose.

Pricing shifts toward pay-per-use

This update indicates OpenAI is shifting away from heavily subsidized subscriptions. The company is leaning toward pay-per-use pricing structures instead. Microsoft already uses this model with Copilot in certain areas.

Sottiaux notes that API prices should eventually drop significantly. This drop will close the gap between subscription value and pay-per-use API spending. Such a shift allows AI labs to align revenue directly with the value companies extract from artificial intelligence.
