Why it matters

The departure of a major executive like Ryan Roslansky reshapes Microsoft leadership as the company pushes its Copilot AI strategy.

The facts

  • Ryan Roslansky is leaving Microsoft after nearly 18 years across LinkedIn and Microsoft.
  • His departure triggers a leadership shuffle, moving Office and Teams under Charles Lamanna.
  • Roslansky stated he was not willing to move to Microsoft s Redmond headquarters full time.

Ryan Roslansky is leaving Microsoft after spending nearly 18 years at LinkedIn and Microsoft. Roslansky served as the CEO of LinkedIn until recently. He was promoted to head of Office last year and took control of Microsoft Teams earlier this year. His departure triggers another leadership shuffle inside Microsoft.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella addressed the change in an internal memo. Ryan leaves the organization in a strong position, Nadella wrote. Over the past year, Ryan s team has done critical work bringing together the product, engineering, and design foundations that have made this next phase possible.

Roslansky departs one week after Microsoft announced its new Copilot. The company is positioning Copilot as the OS for work. Roslansky also leaves about a month after calling fully AI-generated documents a doom loop for workers. If we are not careful, we will end up with a very expensive way to avoid writing and reading in an ocean of sameness, genericness, Roslansky stated in his LinkedIn post.

Charles Lamanna takes over Office and Teams

Microsoft is moving the teams behind Office and Microsoft Teams over to Charles Lamanna. This change is part of the Copilot, Agents, and Platform organization. This is the second major reshuffling of the Office teams. Rajesh Jha, former head of Microsoft s experiences and devices group, retired from Microsoft earlier this year.

Microsoft s chief design officer, Jon Friedman, is also moving. Friedman will now report to Copilot chief Jacob Andreou. Microsoft appointed Dan Shapero as its LinkedIn CEO earlier this year. Shapero will continue in this role and report directly to Nadella.

Roslansky describes the decision to leave Microsoft as a hard one in his own memo to his teams. He reveals he was not willing to move to Microsoft s Redmond headquarters full time. I know what it would take for me to lead the next phase of this work well: being in Redmond full time, every day, Roslansky says. But my life and my family s life are here in the Bay Area.
