Why it matters

These updates give users deeper AI integration and faster system controls directly within Windows 11.

The facts

  • Microsoft updated its Copilot AI to access local PC files and perform tasks across the operating system.
  • The new features rely on Hybrid Intelligence, combining local and cloud AI models to handle multi-step user requests.
  • A new Windows search experience arriving this fall allows quick actions like dark mode toggling and text messaging.

Microsoft revealed a major upgrade to its Copilot artificial intelligence system during a Windows and Surface event. The new capabilities grant the AI access to local files on personal computers. It also gains the ability to execute actions across the entire operating system.

Microsoft introduced Hybrid Intelligence

The new features form part of a broader concept Microsoft calls Hybrid Intelligence. This approach uses a combination of local and cloud artificial intelligence models to complete tasks with high efficiency. Jacob Andreou, the executive vice president of Copilot at Microsoft, demonstrated the technology live on stage.

Autopilot demonstrated tax document task

Andreou ran a video demonstration showing a tool named Autopilot assisting with tax preparation. He explained to the agent that he received an email from his accountant and instructed it to provide the necessary materials. Autopilot searched multiple folders to locate the requested documents. It then renamed the files, compressed them into a zip folder, and drafted an email with the attachment ready for the accountant.

Features arrive in coming months

Jacob Andreou stated that features powered by Hybrid Intelligence will arrive for Copilot users over the next couple of months. The rollout will introduce these automation tools directly to consumer devices.

Microsoft also previewed an updated Windows search experience. The new interface allows users to perform quick tasks straight from the search bar. Actions include enabling dark mode, adjusting microphone volume via an in-line slider, and sending text messages. Pavan Davuluri, the head of Windows and Surface, announced that this updated search experience will roll out in the fall on Windows 11 personal computers.
