Why it matters

The funding helps Mecka AI supply human motion data for training humanoid and other robots similar to how data companies feed large language models.

The facts

  • Mecka AI raised a $60 million Series B round led by Sequoia.
  • Nvidia and Microsoft venture fund M12 participated in the funding.
  • The startup pays people to record everyday tasks for robot training.

Mecka AI secured a $60 million Series B funding round led by Sequoia. The round also included participation from Nvidia and Microsoft venture fund M12.

TechCrunch previously reported that the startup neared this new funding round at a $500 million valuation. The company launched in 2024 to collect and analyze human motion data.

The startup aims to replicate what data labeling companies achieved for large language models. Firms like Scale AI, Mercor, and Surge supply the human generated data that large language models learn from.

Mecka pays individuals to record themselves performing everyday tasks. These tasks include making coffee and fixing cars while users wear body sensors and use smartphones.

Market includes several data rivals

Other startups also collect real world data for robot training. XDOF previously engaged in talks to raise a Series B round at a $1.2 billion valuation according to prior TechCrunch reporting.

Human data platforms that started with large language models are also expanding into robotics. These expanding platforms include Scale AI and Micro1.
