Instagram is taking new steps to address the rise of fake AI influencer accounts. These profiles have grown steadily harder to spot over time.
The platform is renaming its current AI creator label. It will now be called an AI-generated profile. This change aims to make it clear when an account features an artificial person instead of a real human being.
Instagram explained the reasoning in a recent blog post. People dislike viewing a seemingly human profile only to discover the person featured is actually artificial. Users want clarity when interacting with accounts.
To enforce this transparency, Instagram will hunt down accounts that refuse to self-label their artificial profiles. The platform will penalize these rulebreakers by limiting their overall reach.
This penalty means posts from unlabeled accounts will no longer be recommended to non-followers in the Reels and Explore tabs. Profile owners can appeal this decision if the system flags them by mistake.
Instagram clarified that users who simply use AI tools to generate individual pieces of content do not need to add the label. Therefore, this action will not allow users to filter out all AI slop across the entire platform.
Instagram boss Adam Mosseri is leading this push to take the first step. The platform will now begin hunting down and penalizing accounts that hide their artificial identities.
