Anthropic has established a biology research lab in the San Francisco Bay Area to conduct physical experiments. Reuters reported the development, which was confirmed by Eric Kauderer-Abrams, the head of life sciences at Anthropic.
Kauderer-Abrams explained the reasoning behind the physical facility to Reuters. He stated that the final test for biology is still, and will be for a while, real lab work. He added that the company is absolutely doing that today while also working with external partners when it makes sense.
Kauderer-Abrams did not specify the exact projects underway at the facility. Anthropic previously launched a drug discovery program named Claude Science in June. The company stated at the time that it wanted to pursue research that pharmaceutical companies would typically avoid due to low financial payoffs.
A company spokesperson clarified to Reuters that the newly created lab was not built specifically, or perhaps only, for drug discovery. The exact nature of the work currently happening inside the facility remains undisclosed.
Kauderer-Abrams expressed belief that artificial intelligence could accelerate the discovery of treatments for conditions previously deemed too difficult to treat. He noted that technology could help speed up the creation of complex and targeted therapies.
Sources told Reuters that Anthropic is exploring ways to have its Claude model control robots to execute scientific experiments. Kauderer-Abrams clarified that the company is in the very early innings of using artificial intelligence to automate lab work execution. He emphasized that human oversight remains essential for safety, at least for now.
Anthropic has not yet run any clinical trial. The expansion into physical laboratories occurs while the firm continues to navigate public trust challenges facing the broader artificial intelligence industry.
The company recently disclosed that it flagged and stopped multiple scientists who attempted to use its artificial intelligence models to create potential biological weapons. Additionally, Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei has called for a slowdown on advanced artificial intelligence development to lower the risk of losing control over frontier systems.
