This marks the first one-on-one meeting between the two men. They recently took opposing stances on artificial intelligence safety. Amodei released a plan to slow development or proceed with caution. Trump insisted without evidence that the artificial intelligence backlash is a Democratic hoax and wants to rebrand the technology as super intelligence.
Tensions persist over AI safety guardrails
Amodei and Anthropic experienced a fraught relationship with the Trump administration prior to this disagreement. The Pentagon designated Anthropic a supply-chain risk earlier this year after the company tried to place guardrails around its technology use. Anthropic is currently fighting this designation in court, though other administration officials maintain a friendlier stance.
Amodei also appeared as a lampooned figure on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live over the weekend. The dinner follows that television appearance as his high-profile public visibility continues.
