AMD is mixing things up. Their Ryzen PRO 9000 CPUs are getting a feature previously reserved for gamers: 3D V-Cache. This tech is now heading to workstation processors, aiming to boost performance for professional applications.
3D V-Cache stacks extra memory on top of the CPU die. This provides faster access to data. It's proven effective in gaming. Now, AMD wants to leverage it for complex tasks like simulation, rendering, and real-time visualization. According to AMD, this tech will be useful for “complex, data-intensive workloads such as simulation, rendering and real-time visualization.”
The Ryzen PRO 9000 series is built on AMD's Zen 5 architecture. These chips will range from 6 to 16 cores, with 12 to 32 threads. They'll support up to 256GB of EEC DDR5 memory. PCIe 5.0 is also supported. Keep in mind that only select models will include the 3D V-Cache.
This isn't entirely out of the blue. While 3D V-Cache started with gaming, it's been showing promise in creative workloads too. Tom Warren reviewed the Ryzen 9 9950X3D last year. He called it “the best CPU for both gaming and creator tasks.” He also noted that it “greatly improves creator workloads” compared to other models.
The move signals AMD's broader ambition. They're not just targeting gamers anymore. They want a piece of the professional workstation market. By bringing 3D V-Cache to the Ryzen PRO series, they're offering a compelling option for users who need serious processing power.
Expect these new chips to start appearing in the second half of 2026. Lenovo's ThinkStation P4 is slated to launch with the new CPUs in Q3 2026. This will give professionals a chance to experience the benefits of 3D V-Cache firsthand.
It's a smart play by AMD. Workstations benefit from similar performance boosts as gaming rigs when it comes to memory access. This move could shake up the workstation CPU landscape. It might even push Intel to respond with similar innovations.
