Airbnb is shifting its platform strategy in two distinct directions. On the physical side, the company aims to compete directly with hotels by offering numerous services. Online, the platform is utilizing artificial intelligence and its user network to improve travel discovery.
As part of its fall product update, Airbnb is expanding app services originally launched last year. These additions include meal delivery, laundry services, baby gear rentals, and expanded grocery delivery. Ski and boat rentals are also available in limited locations.
AI search replaces traditional filters
The company is launching an AI search tool after taking a cautious approach to artificial intelligence features. CEO Brian Chesky previously chose to avoid a standard chatbot interface. Users can now activate a toggle to search for properties using text or voice prompts.
The interface displays dynamic filters based on user preferences once a search begins. Typing the word baby into the filter automatically reveals additional options like cribs, playgrounds, or children's books and toys. Artificial intelligence also highlights relevant property features and compares wish list items using summaries and reviews.
CEO Brian Chesky explained the company's cautious rollout to TechCrunch. He stated that creating search functions is simple, but protecting conversion rates on a platform moving one hundred billion dollars is difficult.

Social features expand travel discovery
Airbnb is also enhancing social features designed to encourage users to book more trips and experiences. Travelers can now view a map based on the past or upcoming trips of their connections. Tapping on a trip reveals where connections stayed and which experiences they chose. Users who prefer privacy can choose not to share their trips with others.
Additionally, the platform is creating neighborhood pages using guest reviews and other sources. These pages help travelers discover local dining options and activities. Experiences such as food tastings and craft workshops are part of this push.
The company will iterate quickly on the new search feature over the coming months.
