Codex Goes Mobile

OpenAI is making its Codex desktop AI tool accessible through the ChatGPT mobile app. This means you can now use your iOS or Android phone to tell Codex what to do on your computer. It's rolling out now as a preview on iOS and Android for all ChatGPT plans, including the free plan.

Codex can write code and use apps on your computer. The idea is that you can use your phone to manage Codex remotely.

According to OpenAI's blog post, the mobile integration allows you to "work across all of your threads, review outputs, approve commands, change models, or start something new" within Codex. All from your phone.

This update builds on OpenAI's recent efforts to enhance Codex, including a major update that allows it to operate apps on macOS. It seems like OpenAI is aiming to create a powerful desktop "superapp", and the mobile integration is a step in that direction.

Here's how it works: your files, credentials, permissions, and local setup stay on the machine where Codex is running. Updates, including screenshots, terminal output, diffs, test results, and approvals, are sent to your phone in real time.

This move follows a surge in popularity for Anthropic's Claude Code, which is a similar tool. OpenAI appears to be focusing on growing its enterprise business and catching up in the AI assistant space.

OpenAI has been making some strategic decisions lately, including cutting back on "side quests" and shutting down projects like the Sora video-generation tool to focus on core products like Codex and ChatGPT. The Codex integration into the mobile app is a key part of that strategy.
