OpenAI is expanding advertisements inside ChatGPT. One of the first new formats will display visual ads while users generate images. The company plans to begin testing this format later this month in the United States with an initial group of advertisers.
These advertisements may use images to display product inspiration, product usage, or experiences tied to a service. This gives companies a more visual way to promote themselves within ChatGPT. OpenAI stated that the ads will be clearly labeled and will remain separate from the actual images being created.
OpenAI also stated that advertisements do not influence the answers provided by ChatGPT. The platform currently reaches 1.2 billion people every week. Advertising serves as another method for OpenAI to generate revenue from users who do not pay for a subscription.

Along with the visual format, OpenAI is introducing new measurement tools for advertisers. These tools check whether ChatGPT ads actually drive purchases or other conversions. The company is integrating with Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp for conversion data. Attribution partners now include AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Triple Whale, and Kochava.
OpenAI is also collaborating with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science on brand suitability. This is particularly important because ads appear around active conversations rather than standard webpages. The company stated that its safeguards are built to stop ads from showing up in emotionally vulnerable, sensitive, or unsuitable conversations.
OpenAI noted that these independent partners will not gain access to private user conversations while checking if the advertising safeguards function correctly. For now, the visual ad test is restricted to the U.S. OpenAI views advertising as a growing part of ChatGPT as it seeks to monetize its 1.2 billion weekly users.
