OpenAI is launching a dedicated ChatGPT mode for teenagers. The new system combines existing youth safeguards with fresh safety functions under one umbrella. The release arrives amid increasing public scrutiny regarding how artificial intelligence tools impact younger users.
The feature will automatically activate for users who state they are between 13 and 17 years old. It will also apply to accounts the system estimates belong to someone under 18. OpenAI policy prohibits children under 13 from using the platform.
Teen mode applies default protections that restrict prohibited or sensitive content. This includes graphic violence, self-harm depictions, and sexual or romantic roleplay. The interface will also display warnings regarding eating disorders.
Parents gain controls to establish quiet hours. They can also receive notifications if the system flags a potential safety risk. Additional features encourage balanced usage through sensitive image reminders and teen-specific onboarding.
OpenAI is including responsible homework reminders that detect when a user tries to bypass an assignment. The tool redirects users to a study mode. Teens and parents can also configure designated study hours.
Many protections in the launch are not entirely new. The release consolidates existing safeguards with minor additions. OpenAI previously deployed age-prediction tools, parental controls, and study mode features over the past year.
OpenAI stated that the teen protections rely on ongoing safety research. The company plans to publish further findings and build additional safety features in the future.
