OpenAI and Synopsys signed a multi-year strategic partnership. The companies plan to build a specialized artificial intelligence model for chip design named GPT-Synopsys. Synopsys develops electronic design automation tools. Engineers use this software to design computer chips and semiconductors.
GPT-Synopsys merges two major technologies
The new model combines artificial intelligence technology from OpenAI with electronic design automation tools from Synopsys. OpenAI licensed these software tools specifically for the project. The system aims to reason about chip design and verification while directly operating the software tools.
Human engineers will delegate design objectives to the system. Those engineers will then review and approve the final output. The model will operate entirely on infrastructure provided by OpenAI.
Security measures and early tests protect clients
Customer data will not be used for training the artificial intelligence model. Both companies stated that client information will be stored with encryption. Early testing with semiconductor customers is already underway.

Both corporate partners will market the product together. They also agreed to share the resulting revenue. Synopsys CEO Sassine Ghazi stated that artificial intelligence could significantly speed up the design process.
Broad partnerships drive hardware development
OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman views the partnership as a path toward better chips and better artificial intelligence. OpenAI is also collaborating with Broadcom on custom hardware built specifically to run artificial intelligence models. The recently unveiled Jalapeno chip competes strongly against similar specialized chips.
The companies will continue marketing the GPT-Synopsys product together as early customer tests progress.
