OpenAI has acquired Glass Imaging for more than $300 million. The Wall Street Journal published the report regarding the smartphone camera maker.
Glass Imaging is based in Los Altos, California. The company launched in 2019.
The startup previously raised roughly $30 million from investors. Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop founded the enterprise.
Both founders are former Apple engineers. They previously led the development team for Apple Portrait Mode.
Glass Imaging uses artificial intelligence to bypass the physical limitations of smartphone hardware. Neural networks study specific camera systems to improve image quality at the exact moment the shutter clicks.
This approach differs from traditional software that edits photos after capture. OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the transaction.
Rumors suggest the ChatGPT maker is developing its own hardware products. Potential items include smartphones, earbuds, and AI companion devices.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and designer Jony Ive disclosed a device startup named io in 2025. That revelation followed OpenAI acquiring Ive company for $6.5 billion.
