The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is evaluating allegations that Tesla robotaxis exceeded “posted speed limits in active school zones.” The vehicles were using Tesla’s automated driving system, or ADS. The agency has not said the allegation is an established finding.
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation received a petition on September 23, 2026. It requests an investigation into model year 2026 Tesla Robotaxis, specifically the Model Y and Cybercab, with ADS engaged. The speeding claim comes from the petitioner.
Tesla has about 1,000 robotaxis using its automated driving system. The Cybercab launched earlier this year. It is already under investigation over its lack of side mirrors, pedals and a steering wheel.

NHTSA investigates other Tesla traffic violations
NHTSA has also opened an investigation into Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system for traffic violations, including going through red lights and driving on the wrong side of the street. That investigation concerns Full Self-Driving. The new petition concerns robotaxis with ADS engaged.
Waymo’s robotaxis have faced similar inquiries, including for illegally passing school buses and hitting a child near a California elementary school. NHTSA is evaluating the request to investigate the Tesla school-zone speeding allegation.
