Instagram is giving parents more visibility into what their teens are doing on the platform. Starting Tuesday, parents will be able to see the general topics their teens are engaging with, like basketball or fashion. This is part of an effort to increase transparency and parental control.

Meta is also adding a notification feature. Parents will get notified when their teen adds a new interest to their Instagram algorithm. Think of it as a heads-up system, letting parents know what their kids are exploring online.

This builds on Instagram's existing "Your Algorithm" feature. This lets users choose topics they want to see more or less of. Teen accounts already have restrictions on the topics they can add. The content shown to teens should be similar to content in a PG-13 movie, according to Meta.

Meta announced these changes in a blog post. The goal is to provide parents with better tools to understand and manage their teen's online experience. "We’re consolidating the parental controls for Instagram, Meta Horizon, Facebook, and Messenger into a single hub in Family Center," Meta said.

Family Center is getting an upgrade. It's becoming a central hub for all parental controls across Meta's apps. Parents can now send a single invitation to supervise their teen across all of these apps. This simplifies the process of overseeing their child's online activity.

More features are coming to Family Center in the coming months. Meta plans to add tools such as aggregated time spent by teens in Meta's apps. This will give parents a broader view of their child's usage patterns.

These changes reflect Meta's ongoing effort to address concerns about teen safety and well-being on its platforms. By providing more transparency and control to parents, Meta hopes to create a safer online environment for young users.
