Google just upped its keyboard game. They announced Rambler, a new dictation feature powered by AI for Gboard. Gboard is their widely used Android keyboard app. The announcement came during Google's Android Show: I/O Edition 2026 event on Tuesday.

What does this mean? Google is now going head-to-head with dictation startups like Wispr Flow and Typeless. These companies have been building AI-powered dictation apps, finding audiences on both desktop and mobile. However, most haven't really cemented their place on Android yet. This move by Google could make it tough for them.

So, what makes Rambler special? Well, like other dictation apps, it cleans up your speech. It automatically removes filler words like “um” and “ah.” It also gets smart about corrections. Imagine you say, “I am going to meet you on Wednesday at our usual coffee shop at 3 p.m. … um, 2 p.m.” Rambler understands you want to change the time to 2 p.m. It’s pretty slick.

The dictation market is heating up. We're seeing more and more AI tools that aim to make typing obsolete. The appeal is clear: speak your mind, and let the AI handle the rest. Google integrating this directly into Gboard gives them a massive advantage.

It's worth noting that Google already has a huge user base with Gboard. That gives Rambler a significant leg up on the competition. New dictation apps will need to offer something really unique to stand out.

"We are excited to bring the power of Gemini to Gboard users," said a Google spokesperson during the event. "Rambler represents our commitment to making communication easier and more efficient for everyone."
