Why it matters

Figma’s updates give teams and agents a shared design reference while connecting prototypes, code, and website content in its platform.

The facts

  • Figma introduced Specs, a Markdown editor that gives teams and agents a reference for design rules.
  • Code layers are entering public beta after a private beta announced in June.
  • Figma is integrating Payload with Figma Make to generate dynamic websites and manage content.

Figma announced a Markdown-based editor for design rules, expanded access to code layers, and added a Payload integration at its first Config event in India. The updates give teams a way to provide design context to Figma’s agents and third-party agents as they create with AI.

The new editor, Figma Specs, lets teams describe their design language in a document that people and agents can use as a reference. A Specs document can stand alone as a Figma file or sit alongside work on the canvas.

Teams can link Specs to canvas elements and embed FigJam diagrams, code layers, and designs. They can also bring design libraries, code libraries, and guidelines into a central source of context for their design system. Agents can refer to it when following a brand’s rules.

More users can test code layers

Figma widened access to its canvas agent in the past week. Because AI output can vary, the company is also adding ways to guide the agent toward more predictable results.

Code layers add code to canvas designs so teams can build more interactive prototypes. Figma announced the feature in private beta in June and is opening a public beta at its India event. Users can ask the agent to turn a design into code or change part of the code while iterating on a prototype.

Figma chief design officer Loredana Crisan told TechCrunch that teams are producing 17 times more lines of code than before, while releases have risen only 1.3 times. She said much of that code is used to discover and design a product before it ships. That helps explain Figma’s focus on tools that connect design decisions with code.

Figma said its MCP now supports more than 20 new tools, including Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot, and Indian AI startup Sarvam.

Payload connects content to Figma Make

Figma acquired the open-source headless content management system Payload last year. It is now integrating Payload with Figma Make so users can generate dynamic websites and manage their content directly. Figma said Payload downloads have increased sixfold in the past 12 months.

India is Figma’s largest user market outside the United States, according to the company. Figma opened its first office there late last year for sales, partnerships, go-to-market work, and product support. It said it works with 40% of India’s top 100 companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange. With code layers entering public beta, more users can now test the feature.
