OpenAI says ChatGPT can now view tabs already open in Google Chrome. The feature requires the ChatGPT Chrome extension and works when a user tags Chrome in ChatGPT’s web or desktop app. It arrives after OpenAI’s ChatGPT Atlas browser went away.
In a demo video, OpenAI showed someone asking ChatGPT to compare three open tabs featuring sofas they were considering. The company also gave examples of tasks that use information across tabs.
One example asks ChatGPT to “Use the details in this event brief to fill out the registration form, and stop before submitting.” Another asks it to “Put the vendors in these tabs into my comparison sheet, with pricing, key features, and source links.”
OpenAI also suggests asking ChatGPT to “Look at all the tabs I have open and compare the contractor services. Then draft an email to the one that fits my home renovation.” A fourth example says: “Fill out the form I have open in @chrome ahead of seeing my new dentist. Also, can you add the appointment to my work and personal calendar.”

OpenAI has updated ChatGPT in Chrome’s sidebar, too. It says the sidebar offers “the full power of ChatGPT” and access to a user’s entire Chat or Work conversation history without leaving the page they are viewing.
For ChatGPT Work, the extension can also “control” Chrome tabs to handle tasks such as “sending messages, filling out forms, or downloading files.” It can organize or group open tabs as well. The tab controls are similar to Google’s Gemini-powered “auto browse” feature.
To use the tab viewing feature, users need the extension installed, then tag Chrome in ChatGPT’s web or desktop app.
