Amazon Luna Shuts Down Third-Party Game Purchases, Rethinks Strategy
Amazon Luna Pivots, Axes Third-Party Game Access
Amazon Luna, the cloud gaming platform launched in 2020 to challenge the likes of Xbox Cloud Gaming and the late Google Stadia, is undergoing a significant strategic shift. The company announced Friday it will discontinue support for purchasing individual games and third-party subscriptions, effectively locking users into the titles available within their Luna subscriptions.
This means that as of June 10th, 2026, players will no longer be able to access games they previously purchased through Luna. While these games will still be accessible on other platforms via EA, GOG, or Ubisoft accounts, Luna will no longer support these third-party storefronts. Subscriptions to Ubisoft Plus and Jackbox Games through Luna are also being discontinued, with active subscriptions canceled at the end of their current billing cycle.
The "Bring Your Own Library" feature, which allowed players to access titles from third-party platforms on Luna, will also be sunsetted on June 3rd. Disappointingly, Amazon will not be offering refunds for third-party games purchased through Luna.
Brittney Hefner, an Amazon Luna spokesperson, stated that the changes reflect a transition "away from certain subscription, game store, and a-la-carte purchasing models in favor of approaches we believe work better for our customers long term." Hefner assured that Amazon remains committed to investing in a diverse range of gaming experiences, including "strong third-party titles" within the Luna subscription.
Luna offers two primary subscription tiers: Luna Standard, included with a $14.99 Amazon Prime subscription, features titles like EA Sports FC 26, Hogwarts Legacy, and Skyrim. Luna Premium, priced at $9.99 per month, expands the library with games like Alien: Isolation, Borderlands 3, and Sonic Frontiers. This move signals a clear consolidation around the subscription model, leaving users who preferred purchasing individual titles out in the cold.
